Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April, 1972. As an only girl Scott was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott was a student at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she enrolled in Temple University. There, Scott worked two jobs while she was learning about secondary education. She hoped to become a teacher of English at a secondary school. This dream however, was in vain when she left college after three year of studies and was a teacher's assistant. A poet by trade She began to sing in live poetry recitals. Then she joined with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create an ensemble. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. The singer performed at an Roots concert. Afterward she secured collaborations with stars such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In the Canada tour of The Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable experiences performing.
